Sleeping Bag Testing – Aztec Guaranteed Performance

On the 30th of December 1995, in Altnaharra, in the North West Highlands of Scotland a staggering temperature of -27.2°C was recorded. At the other extreme, during the heat of a mid summers night, temperatures can achieve a sweltering 20°C plus. Whilst we recognise these are extremes and that individual thermal requirements vary from person to person, at Aztec, we also understand our responsibility to ensure that we have a range of sleeping bags that meet the demands of our customers, and more importantly, that each sleeping bag clearly indicates its limits of use in terms of Temperature Ratings.

1. Upper Comfort Temperature The temperature suitable for the inexperienced camper in normal nightwear.
2. Lower Comfort Temperature The lower limit of the Comfort Range. A useful guide for more experienced campers wearing full length top and bottoms and thick socks.
3. Extreme Temperature The Extreme Temperature is the very lowest temperature at which the bag will perform. Please note: Inexperienced users and those who are not dressed for cold weather conditions run the risk of hypothermia at these temperatures. Those wishing to sleep in extreme weather conditions should not use the Extreme Temperature rating as an indication of the bags normal use.

Temperature Ratings °C

In addition to the "Field Tests" conducted by the Aztec development team, all Aztec sleeping bags are tested to BS4745 British Standard to evaluate the TOG value, and a representative selection of sleeping bags are tested to the thermal requirements of EN13537 European Standard to ensure all Aztec temperature ratings correlate with EN13537.

Aztec test in the following independent testing facilities:
BS4745 Performance Clothing Research Group, Leeds University
BS4745 ITS, Intertek Testing Services
EN13537 Hohenstein Institute for Clothing Physiology

Please note: these sleeping bag ratings are obtained under standardised test conditions. Performance may vary during use due to a number of factors such as air and ground temperature, posture, whether the bag is used with a sleeping mat, level of clothing worn whilst using the bag or individual metabolic rates and previous activity levels.
